Increased life expectancy, a more sedentary lifestyle, and rising obesity rates have all contributed to the <strong>growing prevalence of joint pain<\/strong>. By <strong>2032, 30% of all adults over 40<\/strong> are expected to be diagnosed with osteoarthritis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-a-science-backed-approach-to-osteoarthritis-treatment\"><strong>A Science-Backed Approach to Osteoarthritis Treatment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <strong>osteoarthritis treatment pyramid<\/strong> is a well-established, evidence-based model that guides treatment decisions. At the <strong>base of the pyramid<\/strong>, first-line treatment consists of <strong>patient education and structured physical exercise<\/strong>, particularly individualized and supervised programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Patients should always <strong>start at the bottom of the pyramid<\/strong> rather than where most begin today\u2014with painkillers in the <strong>middle<\/strong> of the pyramid. According to <strong>leading scientists and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)<\/strong>, <strong>surgery should only be considered when other treatment methods have proven ineffective<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, research shows that only about <strong>10% of osteoarthritis patients require surgery<\/strong> to achieve substantial pain relief and quality of life improvements. For the remaining <strong>90%<\/strong>, first-line treatment\u2014sometimes combined with pain medication\u2014is enough to manage symptoms and enhance daily function.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-new-study-the-strongest-driving-factor-for-surgery-is-the-patient-s-own-preference\"><strong>New Study: The Strongest Driving Factor for Surgery is the Patient\u2019s Own Preference<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent study from <strong>Link\u00f6ping University<\/strong>, analyzing <strong>72,069 osteoarthritis patients<\/strong>, found that <strong>the majority did not require surgery within five years of completing first-line treatment<\/strong>. However, the study also highlighted a concerning trend:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>strongest predictor of joint replacement surgery<\/strong> was <strong>the patient\u2019s desire for surgery<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Walking difficulties and pain severity were not strong predictors of surgery.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While it is natural that all healthcare decisions are <strong>voluntary<\/strong>, this finding suggests that <strong>many patients undergo joint replacement surgery when first-line treatment could have been a viable alternative<\/strong>\u2014a treatment that is both cost-effective and risk-free compared to surgery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-many-surgery-patients-could-have-benefited-from-first-line-treatment\"><strong>Many Surgery Patients Could Have Benefited from First-Line Treatment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>What is particularly concerning is that research shows <strong>no significant differences<\/strong> in <strong>age, BMI, or pain levels<\/strong> between those who begin first-line treatment and those who undergo surgery. This suggests that <strong>a substantial number of joint replacements may be avoidable<\/strong> with better awareness and access to early interventions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-this-matters-for-the-healthcare-system\"><strong>Why This Matters for the Healthcare System<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. healthcare system is already burdened with <strong>record-long wait times<\/strong>, including <strong>delays for joint replacement surgery<\/strong>. A <strong>widespread misconception<\/strong> persists among patients that surgery is the only effective solution\u2014despite guidelines from the <strong>CDC, OARSI, and ACR<\/strong> recommending <strong>first-line intervention before considering joint replacement surgery<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-the-solution-increasing-access-to-first-line-treatment\"><strong>The Solution: Increasing Access to First-Line Treatment<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In <strong>Sweden<\/strong>, hundreds of thousands of osteoarthritis patients have been treated through <strong>Joint Academy\u2019s digital treatment<\/strong> or via <strong>Supported Osteoarthritis Self-Management Programs (SOASP)<\/strong>.
