New Study Shows Positive Effects of Digital Physical Therapy for Shoulder Pain

December 13, 2023

Shoulder pain is a common issue that can lead to reduced shoulder function, sick leave, and often long-term discomfort. For many shoulder conditions, exercise guided by a physical therapist (physical therapy) is the primary treatment. Research has shown that physical therapy can be just as effective as surgery for several different shoulder conditions.

Since 2021, patients with chronic shoulder pain have had access to digital physical therapy treatment through Joint Academy. A recently published study examined the effectiveness of Joint Academy’s treatment program. The study, published in the Journal of Rehabilitation Medicine, demonstrated promising results.

Reduced Pain and Improved Function

The study included nearly 700 participants. After three months of treatment, participants reported significantly less pain (-36%) and improved function (-32%). Reduced pain can lead to a better quality of life, allowing individuals to return to hobbies and perform daily activities more easily.

“After just one month, I noticed an improvement, and after another month, the improvement was significant. My pain level dropped from 9 to 2 in my right shoulder and down to 1 in my left. It has helped me tremendously.” – Martin, Joint Academy patient

High Adherence to Digital Shoulder Treatment

The treatment program includes exercises designed to improve strength, mobility, and function in the shoulder. It also provides educational content to help patients understand their condition and manage their symptoms effectively, following guidelines from the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare. Patients have access to a personal physical therapist who tailors the program and supports them throughout their treatment. The Joint Academy app provides access to the physical therapist, exercise program, and educational materials.

Patient adherence plays a crucial role in treatment success. Adherence refers to how well patients follow and complete their treatment plans. Digital treatment appears to enhance adherence for various musculoskeletal conditions.

Among those who completed the three-month shoulder treatment program, adherence rates were high: on average, participants completed nearly 90% of the exercises and educational content provided through the app. Higher adherence was also linked to better treatment outcomes.
